Superfoods for 2016
Just when you thought you were being super cool and healthy by munching on kale chips and quinoa it would appear that these superfoods (for those in the know) are so 2015. Check out the below superfood predications for 2016 to ensure you don’t get left behind in a mound of quinoa flakes…….
There is a new kid on the block set to cause quite a stir within the health industry, meet Teff. Teff is a tiny Ethiopian grain, very similar in nutritional content to quinoa with the additional benefits of greater versatility in cooking and a higher nutrient profile. Teff is one of the few grains to contain vitamin K which we need for blood clotting and bone health. Teff is one of the most nutrient rich grains on the planet, high in protein, iron, vitamin B, fibre and calcium making Teff a strong contender as a new super food in 2016.
Lupin is predicted to be another nutrient rich new superfood set to take the health industry by storm. Lupin is an ancient legume, highly regarded by the early Egyptians and Romans and mainly consumed throughout the Mediterranean. Lupins are particularly high in magnesium and calcium, minerals that are commonly deficient in the modern day diet and essential for bone health and a healthy nervous system. Lupin is a versatile cooking ingredient as the flakes are a good substitute in gluten free cooking or for those looking to increase prebiotic fibre, antioxidants and protein into their diet.
Forget about counting calories, not all calories are used the same way in the body. For example 200 calories of sugar would be used very differently to 200 calories of green vegetables, the calorie concept is outdated. Nutrients are the new thing to count, the more nutrient dense a food is, the better it is for you and the less likely you are to over eat as your body is getting the nutrients it needs. Result is food cravings and urges to over eat are kept at bay.

With kale once being heralded as the superior superfood of them all, the humble cauliflower is now set to push king kale of his throne. Cauliflower is jammed packed full of phytonutrients and antioxidants and is a wonderful liver detoxifier to boot. It’s low energy content, high fibre and high nutrient content sees cauliflower as one of the most versatile vegetables available. Cauliflower can be used as a healthy alternative to a pizza base, rice, roast potatoes and a healthy low carb pseudo mash potato. Can the world keep up with the supply of cauliflower in 2016?
